Leon is a Director of the Knight Piésold Global Group and is based in the Johannesburg office. He has over three decades of experience in water engineering, including planning and design of large dams, water conveyances, pump stations, and hydroelectric power stations. He has been the study leader on a number of large multidisciplinary water resources planning and/or operating studies, all involving dams, pump stations, and various forms of conveyances and hydroelectric power stations.
Recent experience includes oversight of the design and construction of the 65-m-high CFRD Berg River Dam in the Western Cape of South Africa, the 48-m-high RCC Ntimbale Dam in Botswana, and the 88-m-high RCC Neckartal Dam in Namibia. He has directly managed and participated in numerous projects that have received outstanding recognition and awards for technical excellence. Leon also serves on the management team that is responsible for the design and construction of the 1,333 MW Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme—one of the largest hydropower projects in the southern hemisphere. His hydropower experience is not limited to South Africa, as he assumes very strategic roles in the expert technical review of several hydropower projects on the African continent and beyond. Leon is highly experienced in the negotiation, establishment, and management of major joint venture consortia and partnerships that design and oversee construction of major, multidisciplinary international projects. He is and has been the FIDIC Engineer for various dams.
