Amal Doorgapershad is the Regional Manager for Knight Piésold in KwaZulu-Natal. He has specialised in water engineering and is responsible for Knight Piésold’s Centre of Excellence for Steel Pipelines located in Durban. He has over 22 years of water engineering experience, of which 12 years were spent carrying out infrastructure planning and design for one of South Africa’s largest water supply authorities.
Amal has considerable expertise in bulk water supply infrastructure planning and particularly in the detailed design and implementation of large diameter pipelines. He has carried out detailed water demand forecasting for various municipalities and water boards for the purpose of bulk water infrastructure planning. Further to this, he has carried out several feasibility studies for proposed bulk water supply systems, and served in the role of study leader for the flagship uMkhomazi Water Project, involving 500 million litre per day water treatment works, 170 million litre potable water reservoir, and 20 kilometres of 2820 mm and 2540 mm diameter steel pipelines.
His experience includes the domestic and industrial water supply to a proposed bauxite mine and alumina refinery in Queensland, Australia, as well as the design of pumped and gravity water supply systems, including hydraulic modelling, material selection, engineering and safety risk assessment, and engineering cost estimates.
