Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project

Project Overview

In order to improve current traffic flow and provide a road network that will stimulate development and economic growth in the province, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) set out to upgrade existing road infrastructure and add new road infrastructure. The development of the network was based on the “user-pay” principle (i.e., the network will be a toll road network). The objective of the project was to provide an interconnected network of inner and outer ring roads and to directly link the historically neglected areas of the western and southern townships of Johannesburg with areas such as the East Rand. Scope of services included preliminary investigations, assessment reports, detailed design, contract documentation, tender documentation and processes, construction supervision, materials investigations, and control.

Project Role

Knight Piésold formed the KAS Joint Venture and led the consulting team, which was successfully commissioned to undertake civil engineering consulting works associated with the Gauteng East area upgrades and improvements, known as “Work Package E - improvements, upgrading, rehabilitation and reconstruction to National Route N3 Section 12: Heidelberg Road to Geldenhuys Interchange.” The project involved reconstruction and upgrading of 25 km of road that commenced in July 2007 with a 3-year programme. The works involved all aspects of road construction and included up to date engineering standards and practices involving innovative methods. Road user safety was a priority.
