Oshoopala and Extension 16 Bridges

Project Overview

The Oshoopala and Extension 16 Bridges Project is located a few kilometers from Oshakati, in Oshana Region in the north of Namibia. The town of Oshakati experienced major flooding events that caused extensive damage and resulted in major financial losses.

Project Role

Knight Piésold was tasked to come up with a solution and looked at the following elements:

• Deepening, lining, and widening of approximately 40 km of channels of the Okatana River system that runs through Oshakati
• Investigation of the capacity of the stormwater networks for the whole town
• Construction and upgrading of 16 bridges in and around Oshakati

The project involved the investigation, reporting of preliminary and final designs, tender documentation and adjudication, and site supervision of bridges. Services included:

• Detailed flood line investigations
• Hydraulic channel and gravity pipeline system designs
• Structural bridge designs
• Preparation of tender documentation and tender evaluation
• Specifications and construction drawings
• Project management
• Quality control during construction
