July 29, 2015, Johannesburg, South Africa – Approximately 20 students attending grades 10 to 12 from an underprivileged technical high school in Soweto visited Knight Piésold’s Rivonia office for the Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) Job Shadow Day on July 22, 2015. Knight Piésold South Africa’s CEO and Practice Leader Leon Furstenburg welcomed the students upon arriving, introducing their activities for the day.
Shortly thereafter, students participated in an icebreaker, in which they had to build a paper bridge using only one sheet of A4 paper and four paper clips. The aim was to see how much each bridge, spanning 30 cm, could ultimately support, with sweets as the load factor. The winning team managed to support 21 sweets in total!
Following the icebreaker, staff gave the students a tour of the various technical divisions, providing an overview of the company and functions of each division. The day culminated with an educational site visit to the Northern Wastewater Treatment Works, which is the largest of six wastewater treatment works in Johannesburg. Designed to treat 400 million litres of wastewater every day for approximately 1.6 million people, Knight Piésold has made regular upgrades and improvements to this plant since 1992, having been responsible for the development of Units 4 and 5.
