September 13, 2024, Johannesburg, South Africa – Knight Piésold Southern Africa has been recognized at the 2024 CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards, winning the Renewable Energy Systems Design Excellence Award for the Kikagati Hydropower Project in the Engineering Technology and Innovation category. This accolade from the Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) is a testament to the dedication, innovation, and expertise of the Knight Piésold team in delivering sustainable engineering solutions that make a meaningful impact.

Renewable Energy Systems Design Excellence, Winner: Kikagati Hydropower Project

The Kikagati Hydropower Project, a 16 MW power station located on the Kagera River along the border between Uganda and Tanzania, was developed by Berkeley Energy through the Kikagati Power Company Ltd. The project, which was completed in December 2021, demonstrates the potential of renewable energy to transform remote areas.

Knight Piésold’s role involved reviewing the design details and overseeing the construction process. The project initially planned for a rubble masonry dam; however, due to constraints and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Knight Piésold adapted the design to use conventionally vibrated concrete. This innovative shift in strategy allowed for a more efficient construction process that enabled the project to be completed in just 10 months, reaching its commercial operating date on schedule.

Today, the Kikagati Hydropower Project provides a reliable supply of renewable energy, driving sustainable development in the region and contributing to clean energy solutions in East Africa.

Robert Greyling, technical director of water and power, was recognized as a finalist for the Mentor of the Year category, and Janice Zhang, senior engineer of dams and hydropower, was named a finalist for the Young Engineer of the Year category.
