April 14, 2023, Lima, Peru – Eng. Rubén Vargas, Engineering Manager of Knight Piésold Peru, presented at the XXV International Mining Safety Seminar, which was held on March 29–31 in Lima. He shared his technical experience with mining professionals, giving an overview of the design and management of state-of-the-art tailings dams and the key players that must be engaged in the dissemination of knowledge and the implementation of technology.
The seminar, which is organized annually by the Instituto de Seguridad Minera (ISEM, Mining Safety Institute), constitutes as the most important specialized meeting on mining safety and has been bringing together professionals and specialists in the field at an international level. The main objective of this seminar is to disseminate the latest advances in mining safety worldwide to increase the level of knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of prevention in occupational health and safety issues in the industry.
Vargas’ presentation, "Some challenges in the design and management of tailings dams: How we adapt to the advancement of knowledge and technology," explained various challenges and advances in the evolving tailings industry, and how Knight Piésold is implementing best practices and technologies to design and manage safe and state-of-the-art tailings dams in Peru, which may have the highest dams in the world.
His presentation was well-attended by various professionals, including mine managers, superintendents, operations managers, heads of safety, technical and professional supervisors, contractor and supplier companies, consultants, university professors, and students.
The seminar was a fantastic opportunity for national and international professionals to exchange knowledge about technological advances in mining safety and communicate new trends in the matter, while sharing experiences acquired in different operations globally.
