Project Overview

The Farim Phosphate Project is located in Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. The proposed project is a 1 million tonne per year open pit phosphate mining operation involving onsite processing of phosphate rock and transportation of the product to a new port. This will be Guinea-Bissau’s first modern mine.

Project Role

Knight Piésold provided engineering and environmental services for the project from 2014 to 2019, and again in 2021 to 2022, including:

  • Geotechnical and hydrogeological site investigations
  • Comprehensive supplemental environmental baseline studies
  • Preparation of an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA)
  • Development and implementation of environmental monitoring programs
  • Screening level ESIA of proposed resettlement village
  • Waste and water management, geochemistry, hydrogeology, and mine closure planning contributions to a feasibility study in 2015 and an updated feasibility study in 2022
