Kinsevere Primary Copper Project

Kinsevere Primary Copper Project

Client
MMG Limited

Location
Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Highlights
  • Full ESIA to international standards and to fulfil the requirements of the DRC Mining Code
  • Comprehensive stakeholder engagement within the mine’s area of influence
Project Overview

The Kinsevere Mine site is located in the Kipushi Territory in the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), approximately 30 km north-northwest from Lubumbashi. Copper oxide is mined from three mineralised zones, namely Central Pit, Mashi Pit, and Kinsevere Hill. The mine is investigating the feasibility of extending the life of mine by extracting and processing sulphide ore.

Project Role

Knight Piésold was commissioned to compile the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) to fulfil the requirements of Article 463 of the Regulations in terms of the Mining Code, thereby serving as an update of the 2012 ESIA (for Stage 2 of the mine development). Furthermore, the EISA assessed impacts associated with a sulphide expansion to increase production and extend the life of mine.

The project entailed a full suite of environmental and social baseline studies in collaboration with local and international specialists.

The objectives of this study were to:

  • Determine the environmental and social baseline conditions and identify any potential impacts associated with existing and planned developments
  • Prepare an environmental management plan to prevent, reduce, mitigate, and rehabilitate the impacts identified
  • Conduct a full public consultation process in line with DRC legislative requirements and international best practice

In addition to the ESIA, the project entailed a comprehensive pit lake study to determine the volume and quality of water contained in the pit lake upon closure. Knight Piésold furthermore compiled a mine closure plan and closure cost model.
