Project Overview

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) is developing the Zulti South mineral sands ore body located south of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. The project comprises the development of the Zulti South mineral sands mining concession, which is a receiving station at RBM’s existing beneficiation plant to the north of Richards Bay and the services corridor that links these areas of operation together. The services corridor is approximately 42 km in length and contains a high-pressure HMC slurry pipeline, a raw water pipeline, and electrical and fibre optic communication cables.

Project Role

Knight Piésold was responsible for the design and coordination of all the civil and structural components that make up the services corridor and the integration of the services installation requirements within the corridor.

The structural component of the works includes two pipe bridges: a 220-m-long structural steel bridge with a 60 m main span and a 72-m-long precast, prestressed beam deck made continuous for live load.
