Gustavo Vianna is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Director of Operations for Knight Piésold Brazil. He has over 26 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and investigations for mining dams, deep foundations, and infrastructure projects across Brazil.
Gustavo earned his master’s degree in geoenvironmental engineering from Colorado State University, following his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from FUMEC University in Belo Horizonte. He has been responsible for overseeing significant projects in Brazil, including safety inspections of over 100 mining dams nationwide, deep foundations for Rio Olympic Games civil structures, and settlement monitoring of high rising structures.
He is a recognized leader in the engineering community in Brazil, having served as the president of the Brazilian Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ABMS) in Minas Gerais; organized national conferences and events, such as COBRAMSEG 2016, GeoMin 2017, the first fully online workshop in Tailings Dam Closure in Brazil; and taught geotechnical-related workshops, short courses, and graduate courses as an assistant professor, facilitator, and guest lecturer at key institutions, such as the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, FUMEC University, and SINDUSCON-MG. Gustavo is a nominated member of the Technical Committee on Interactive Design (TC206) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
