Held in early June in Santiago, Chile, the conference drew 446 delegates from 16 countries, representing mining companies, suppliers, consultancies, and other organizations. Over three days, 112 presentations covering strategies and tools for integrating closure planning throughout a mine’s lifecycle were delivered.
Organized by Gecamin, conference topics included closure integration into mine planning, progressive closure strategies, physical and geochemical risk management, environmental and social risk mitigation, post-closure monitoring, and international standard adoption associated with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and ICMM (International Council on Mining and Metals) criteria.
During the Progressive Closure III session, Salas presented “Evolution in Mine Closure Practices: Towards an Integrated and Sustainable Approach in Argentina.” The paper examined how mine closure strategies have evolved in Argentina and emphasized the importance of incorporating closure planning from the early stages of a project through final closure, adopting a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and sustainable approach.
