September 9, 2025, London, UK – Knight Piésold UK is pleased to announce the appointment of Hans Otto as Principal Tailings Engineer. Hans brings over 20 years of international experience in tailings and mine waste engineering, with a proven track record of delivering technically rigorous, cost-effective solutions across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Hans joins Knight Piésold from WSP Golder, where he served as Associate Tailings Engineer, leading multidisciplinary teams in the design, risk assessment, and monitoring of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). His expertise spans the full lifecycle of mine waste infrastructure—from conceptual modelling and feasibility studies to detailed design, closure planning, and compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Hans to our growing UK team,” said Richard Elmer, Regional Manager of Knight Piésold UK. “His depth of experience in tailings governance, coupled with his leadership in complex geotechnical projects, strengthens our ability to support clients in delivering safe, sustainable mine waste solutions.”
Hans has led major tailings projects for clients such as Dundee Precious Metals, Rio Tinto, and Eurasian Resources Group, and has played a key role in aligning legacy and active TSFs with evolving global standards. His technical capabilities include slope stability analysis; design concept modelling using Muk3D; risk assessment and mitigation; and the development of Operations, Maintenance, and Surveillance manuals, emergency response plans, and closure strategies.
In his new role, Hans will oversee technical delivery, provide mentorship, and contribute to the strategic growth of Knight Piésold’s tailings and mine waste service line. He will also support business development and client engagement across the UK and international markets.
“Joining Knight Piésold is an exciting step in my career,” said Hans. “The company’s commitment to technical excellence and long-term client partnerships aligns with my approach to tailings engineering. I look forward to contributing to meaningful, sustainable outcomes across the mining industry.”
Knight Piésold continues to expand its tailings capabilities globally, supporting clients with integrated pragmatic engineering solutions that prioritise safety, environmental stewardship, and long-term performance.
