October 17, 2025, Lima, Peru – Knight Piésold Peru recently participated in a workshop organized by the British Embassy in Lima and the British Geological Survey, focused on analyzing the “Mining Development Corridor in Cajamarca” and its future. This event brought together mining operators, consulting firms, and government representatives to explore territorial integration scenarios, shared infrastructure, and the strengthening of social license in northern Peru.
Elio Murrugarra, Engineering Project Manager at Knight Piésold Peru, shared the company’s technical perspective and extensive experience accumulated over more than three decades of continuous work in major mining operations across the northern region of the country.
In his remarks, Murrugarra emphasized that mining integration challenges extend beyond territorial planning and require adopting true collaborative engineering practices. “The viability of a mining corridor depends on treating the territory as an integrated system, where infrastructure, tailings, and water management solutions transcend individual operations and evolve into shared projects with regional impact,” Murrugarra noted.
One of the workshop’s most significant themes was the conceptual transition from a “mining corridor” to a “mining development corridor,” underscoring the need to align industrial infrastructure with social, environmental, and regulatory challenges. The discussion highlighted critical issues, including social resistance to new projects, the expansion of illegal and informal mining, and current regulatory constraints that hinder joint infrastructure development among operators.
In this context, Knight Piésold contributed international experience through reference cases, where multiple operations have successfully shared tailings facilities safely and efficiently. These precedents reinforce that collaborative models are not only technically feasible but fundamentally necessary to enhance efficiency, reduce impacts, and build long-term social legitimacy.
The workshop facilitated open dialogue and highlighted the value of technical contributions from all the participants, opening possibilities for future working groups focused on resource recovery and tailings optimization.
Knight Piésold’s participation in this workshop reaffirms the company’s commitment to responsible mining development in Peru, promoting engineering solutions grounded in territorial vision, sustainability, and multisector collaboration.
“We extend our appreciation to the British Embassy in Lima and the British Geological Survey for the invitation and constructive dialogue,” Murrugarra concluded. “We remain ready to continue contributing our technical expertise in future engagements.”
